7 Ways to Make the Most of Summer

1. Spend Time in Nature First Thing in the Morning
I have to take care of my animals every single morning before my full-time job and I try to do the chores quickly so that I’m not late for work! However, on the weekends, I try to spend as much time as possible outside in the morning. I will make myself a cup of coffee and head outside straight away.
I like getting outside super early because it’s cooler in the mornings. We have been having some ridiculously hot days so this has been so helpful. I will let the animals out, feed and water them and make sure everyone is good. I then like to water the gardens and take a look at all the new blooms and check on any new veggies. We have harvested a ton of zucchinis and sugar snap peas from our garden already. I love it! Being outside in the fresh sun puts my mind at ease and prepares me for the day.

2. Sun-Dry Your Laundry
This is something that I never thought I would do. When we first moved into this house, I noticed the clothesline in the backyard and thought it looked a bit rundown. I thought we would just take it down but as soon as summer hit, I got the great idea to actually use it, haha! I started with my bedding and towels and let me tell you….I will be doing this all summer! There is no fragrance in my laundry detergent but as soon as the laundry dried, it smelled so fresh and clean. Every time I crawled into my bed, I could smell and feel the freshness of the sheets. I would highly recommend!

3. Make Homemade Popsicles
Popsicles take me back to my childhood. I really don’t like buying popsicles these days because the ingredients are usually pretty terrible. I thought it would be fun to make my own. I grabbed a popsicle mold from Home Goods, blended some ingredients and let everything freeze for a few hours. I made a sort of tropical popsicle with no added sugar and it turned out amazing! The ingredients were: coconut milk, frozen mango, banana and some collagen. Delish and refreshing!

4. Grow Something
This is the theme of summer 2024! I have become obsessed with gardening and spend most of my days out in the garden. In the springtime, I focused a lot on flowers and as it got closer to summer, I started working on the vegetable garden. Flowers definitely beautify my backyard but it is truly special to be able to grow my own food. I would love to become as close as possible to self sufficiency when it comes to growing food. I love gardening because it creates such a peace in my life. My mind is so relaxed when I am focused on using my hands and being outside in nature. I even enjoy weeding the flowerbeds! Although, I am a bit behind on that recently…

5. Read a Favorite Childhood Book
Reading has always been such a huge part of my life, especially during summertime. I remember going to the library when I was a kid on summer break. I would get a huge stack of books and then hide away in my closet reading for hours and hours. I also loved doing the library reading challenges. I will usually read one of my favorite childhood books each summer.
A few of my favorite childhood books:
- Goose Girl, Shannon Hale
- The Secret Garden, Frances Hodgson Burnett
- Heidi, Johanna Spyri
- The Golden Compass, Philip Pullman
- The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkin
- The Book Thief, Markus Zusak
- To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee
- A Little Princess, Frances Hodgson Burnett
- Anne of Green Gables, L.M. Montgomery
- Mary Poppins, P.L. Travers

6. Start Scrapbooking
This year I started scrapbooking because I wanted a way to remember certain moments of my life without having to pick up my phone. The first project I have been working on is a scrapbook of my garden progress. It has been so much fun to see how far I have come with our garden and the backyard in general. I also include a lot of photos of all the animals and it’s crazy to see how fast everyone has grown in such a short amount of time. I would like to start working on a scrapbook that includes all the memories from 2024 so far.

7. Create a Summer Bucket List!
Lastly, but most importantly is working on a summer bucket list. I vaguely remember making a summer bucket list when I was younger but haven’t done one since. It feels so good to have a plan for summer. Before we know it, summer will be gone and fall will be here so I want to make sure I make the absolute most of the summer months. My goal is to spend as much time outside as possible and truly enjoy all the summer has to offer!
Recap:
I hope this post gave you some ideas and inspiration for this summer. It can be so hard to slow things down and enjoy life, especially when trying to juggle a full time job and just life in general. I’ve been working on becoming super intentional with my life recently and it has made such a huge difference. For me, planning ahead is key. I love enjoying simple, small things and want my life to be as slow as possible. I’m hoping this summer will inspire me to slow down even more and be present with all life has to offer!
