This post is all about the May Garden Tour- Cottage Garden Inspiration.
Recently, I have completely fallen in love with gardening and have spent so much time in my backyard dreaming, planning and working towards my garden dreams. I thought it would be fun to start sharing my gardening journey here on the blog. I love the idea of being able to look back and see how far my garden has come. I also think these pictures will be nice to look at once winter hits and my garden is grey and dreary!

I recently built this beautiful wattle fence with my husband using sticks and branches from some fallen trees on our property. We also had to do some tree trimming and used those branches as well. This project took us an evening to do and was actually pretty simple. The reason for building this small fence was to keep our ducks out of this flowerbed. I specifically cleared out this flowerbed for a butterfly garden. I planted a bunch of native wildflower seeds as well as some sunflowers along the back of the flowerbed. I am praying and hoping that these grow up strong and I can enjoy a beautiful wild flowerbed this summer!

This raised flowerbed was sitting in a brush pile on our property and I decided to reuse it since it didn’t seem in too bad of shape. I plan on growing some zinnias, cosmos, and sunflowers in this bed. I have had an issue with Theo (my bernese mountain dog) laying in it so I will need to figure out a way to keep him out! On the trellis next to it, I am growing some clematis, although one of them seems to not be doing so well. I am thinking of moving the clematis to another smaller trellis and maybe moving in some star jasmine since it is fast growing. Not sure though!

Probably one of my favorite parts of the garden is this walkway from the garden shed to the patio area. I plan on redoing the walkway and want it to look very natural. I also want to plant some beautiful flowers in the garden bed to the right to fill in the empty patch of dirt.

This small trellis is to the right of the garden shed door and this is where I was thinking of moving the clematis. I would also like to add a few potted plants there as well. I found the bench at a thrift store and it is probably one of my favorite thrift finds. I would love to find more benches like this to add to the garden!

I absolutely love the way this flowerbed is coming together. I did start thinning out the spiderwort because it was taking over a lot of space in the bed. It also grows very tall and was blocking sunlight for some flowers. At the beginning of spring, I planted a rhododendron that I had in a pot for about a year. I thought it wasn’t going to survive because it had definitely taken some abuse but it is starting to flower and I am so happy!

We have three large blueberry bushes in our backyard and they are starting to ripen. I absolutely cannot wait to pick these and make muffins and pies! I recently bought a net to put on them so the birds don’t eat them when they fully ripen. Stay tuned because I will most certainly be posting a youtube video all about blueberry picking and baking!

My most recent project is this kitchen/tea garden area by the back porch. I wanted a raised bed where I could specifically plant herbs and anything we could quickly grab from the kitchen. I am going to add another raised flowerbed to this area as well as some cow panel for a trellis between the two beds. So far I have planted yarrow, lemon balm (will be moving to a pot), echinacea, lemon thyme, lemon grass, bee balm and lavender. In the second raised bed, I would like to add in some chamomile, dill, rosemary, basil and maybe some tomatoes.

I love the way all these pots look around the raised bed. I found so many great flowers on sale- geraniums, dahlias, and petunias!

My ducks and chickens have also been loving our backyard. I love that they get to free roam for most of the day since Theo does a great job watching them. There are also plenty of trees and bushes for them to go under if they need to hide or get some shade. It is so cute the way chickens will perch on literally anything. I think this makes my garden look very magical.

Gardening has been such a joy this spring and I can’t wait to see the garden come into full bloom this summer. I am looking forward to finishing the kitchen garden area and getting started with the vegetable garden. There is still so much that I want to plant in our flowerbeds and I am looking to add some more height and color as well.
